Collections by Contributor

Minnesota Reflections is the first online project of the Minnesota Digital Library Coalition. It is a collection of nearly 20,000 images and documents depicting the history of Minnesota prior to 1950. More than 75 institutions including historical societies, public libraries, special archives, universities and colleges have shared their original materials with the Minnesota Digital Library. Minnesota Reflections is funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant through the State Library Services and School Technology division of the Minnesota Department of Education, and by the time and talent of the participants in the Minnesota Digital Library Coalition.

American Swedish Institute
The American Swedish Institute, a historic museum dedicated to the celebration of Swedish culture, is home to collections on the history of Swedish immigration to the United States, particularly immigration to Minnesota, Swedish-American life and culture and the history and culture of Sweden as it has influenced Swedish America. The American Swedish Institute contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images from, Svenska Amerikanska Posten, a Swedish-American newspaper, taken between 1898 and 1903. [homepage]

Anoka County Historical Society
The Anoka County Historical Society, in Anoka, Minn., collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to Anoka County. The society supports genealogical research with a wide range of historical resources. Images Anoka County Historical Society contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" show early street scenes, business activities, farming, schools, transportation, fairs, parades, portraits and disasters. Baptist General Conference History Center
The work of the Baptist General Conference History Center was established in 1898. Located on the campus of Bethel University, the BGCHC collects, preserves and disseminates materials significant to Swedish Baptist institutional, cultural, and immigration history; the Baptist General Conference; and Bethel University. The images submitted from the BGCHC collection represent a sampling of Baptist General Conference churches of Minnesota and Bethel University campus scenes. [homepage]

Basilica of Saint Mary
The archival collection of the Basilica of Saint Mary contains documents and artifacts dating to the parish's founding in 1858. Images contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" include photographs documenting the life of the church from 1907 to 1966, and also architectural drawings for the interior finish of the Basilica church, rectory and sacristy in the 1920s, primarily from the St. Paul firm Slifer & Abrahamson. Becker County Historical Society
From Detroit Lakes, Minn., in the northwestern part of the state, the Becker County Historical Society serves the public with a museum, archive collection, cultural demonstrations and K-12 workshops. Their holdings include artifacts dating back to the glacial period of the county, a newspaper microfilm archive, photo collection and an index of courthouse records. Becker County Historical Society's contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes photographs of the lumber industry and portraits of early settlers. [homepage]

Beltrami County Historical Society
The Beltrami County Historical Society operates out of the James J. Hill railroad depot in Bemidji, Minn. The historical society collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of this north central Minnesota county. In "Minnesota Reflections," Beltrami has images showing early street scenes, milling and lumber industry activities, farming, schools and transportation. [homepage]

Big Stone County Historical Society Museum
In Ortonville, Minn., the Big Stone County Historical Society Museum serves the public with genealogy records, a wildlife museum with an extensive taxidermy collection, fossils and artifacts. Their exhibits include a 1900s boat, church, log cabins, machinery, walking trail and a lookout tower gives a breathtaking view of the Minnesota River Valley. The Big Stone County Historical Society's "Minnesota Reflections" project includes images from the Reed Studio Collection, the A.L Lee Collection, the Elite Art Studio Collection, the Utley Collection and images from the general collection, notably from traveling photographer C.I. Angell.

Blue Earth County Historical Society
The Blue Earth County Historical Society in Mankato, Minn., collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of this south central Minnesota county. Among the images Blue Earth County Historical Society contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" are photographs of the Hubbard Milling Company, Mankato State Normal School (now Minnesota State University, Mankato), Bethany Lutheran College and steamboat transportation on the Minnesota River. Carleton College
The Carleton Archives was established in 1967 to preserve the history of Carleton College, Northfield. The photos, taken between 1871 and 1922, reflect student life. They include sports and recreational events, such as field day, gymnastics, football, hockey and baseball teams, a freshman picnic, Bouncing Day, Carleton Circus and May Fete. Some photos depict the first college class in 1871, the parade at a presidential inauguration and class lectures. They all exemplify the early history of Carleton College, which was founded in 1866, one of the first private colleges in Minnesota. [homepage]

Carlton County Historical Society
The Carlton County Historical Society in Cloquet, Minn., serves the citizens of northeastern Minnesota by collecting photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of northeastern county. Their contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes photographs of several towns, especially the settling and development of Cloquet. Topics include industrial scenes, village life, school groups, disasters and street scenes. [homepage]

Clay County Historical Society
The Clay County Historical Society was established in Moorhead, MN, in 1932 to collect, preserve and disseminate the history of Clay County. Collections include the Flaten/Wange Glass Plate Negative Collection. The negatives are the work of two photographers, S. P. Wange of Hawley and Ole E. Flaten of Moorhead. The Society has contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" 75 images shot by Flaten of Moorhead street scenes, events and institutions between 1879 and 1929. These include photos showing steamboats on the Red River, Concordia College and Moorhead State Normal School and the development of Moorhead from a frontier town to a regional commercial and educational center. Clearwater County Historical Society
From its home on the grounds of the historic Shevlin School just north of Bagley, Minn., the Clearwater County Historical Society preserves historic structures and collects photographs and artifacts related to Clearwater County. They contributed scenes from the early development of the county to "Minnesota Reflections." [homepage]

College of St. Catherine
The College of St. Catherine Archives contain historical documents of the college from its founding in 1905, those of St. Mary's School of Nursing (1900 -1966), and St. Mary's Junior College, founded in 1964 and merged with St. Catherine in 1986. The images in "Minnesota Reflections" are those of the early days at St. Catherine and include images of students, buildings, and activities on campus. [homepage]

Concordia University, St. Paul
The library at Concordia University, St. Paul, collects monographs, photographs and documents related to the history of this Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod school founded in 1893. Their contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes scenes of student life from the university's early years. Photographs show scenes of excursions to Minnehaha Falls, ice fishing and boating on the Mississippi River. [homepage]

Cottonwood County Historical Society
The Cottonwood County Historical Society in Windom, Minn., collects and preserves photographs and artifacts related to the 135-year history of this south central Minnesota county. Dakota County Historical Society
The Dakota County Historical Society in South St. Paul, Minn., preserves historic sites, and collects photographs (more than 11,000) and artifacts (more than 25,000) that tell the story of the origins and development of Dakota County. The historical society contributed images to "Minnesota Reflections" that show the changes that took place in the county before 1909. [homepage]

Douglas County Historical Society
From its offices in the early 1900s home of Minnesota statesman Knute Nelson in Alexandria, Minn., the Douglas County Historical Society preserves photographs, objects and structures that tell the history of this Central Minnesota county. They contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" scenes from the early development of the resort and lake industry in Douglas County. [homepage]

Faribault County Historical Society
The Faribault County Historical Society, with headquarters in Blue Earth, Minn., offers artifacts, photographs and images showing the development of the county, which was first settled in 1856. The society operates its museum in the house of James Wakefield, and also supports the Etta C. Ross memorial library built in 1904, and the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, which has the first stained glass window west of the Mississippi. It operates a historical village at the Faribault County fairgrounds. The contributions to Minnesota Reflections show rural life and development of the south central rural area highlighting farming and expansion of the railroads.

Fillmore County Historical Society
The Fillmore County Historical Society in Fountain, Minn., collects photographs and artifacts related to the history of Fillmore County, which is one of the oldest counties in the state and is located in the southeastern part of Minnesota on the Iowa border. The historical society shared with "Minnesota Reflections" images of the early development of the county including milling, woolen and creamery industries, and photographs of the fire department, churches, the courthouse and the county poor house.

The Freeborn County Historical Society in Albert Lee, Minn., supports a library, museum and historical village. The society contributed photographs of the county courthouse to "Minnesota Reflections." [homepage]

Goodhue County Historical Society
The Goodhue County Historical Society was founded in 1869 and is the oldest county historical society in Minnesota. Located in Red Wing, Minn., the historical society preserves and interprets the natural and cultural history of this southeastern county. They contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images from the Reinhold J. Kosec photograph collection, including images of agriculture, industry, sports, military, schools, parks, homes, river scenes and early street scenes. [homepage]

Gustavus Adolphus College
Gustavus Adolphus College is home to the collections of The College Archives and The Lutheran Church Archives. Gustavus Adolphus College archives contributed documents and images illustrating the growth of this educational institution from a parochial school for immigrant Swedish children in Red Wing, to St. Ansgar's Academy in Carver County, to a liberal arts college in St. Peter. The Lutheran Church Archives contributed images from the Lutheran Minnesota Conference (1858-1962), the Red River Valley Conference (1912-1962) of the Augustana Lutheran Church, the Minnesota and Red River synods of the Lutheran Church in America (1963-1987) and the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod of the Northwest (1891-1962), showing scenes of Swedish immigrant activities across Minnesota. Hamline University
University Archives at Hamline University collects and preserves university records, publications, photographs, audiotapes, films, artifacts, and other materials from the university's early days in Red Wing (1854-1869) to its present in St. Paul. For "Minnesota Reflections," the archives contributed images of presidents, faculty, students, athletics and other activities, and the university and its Saint Paul neighborhood. [homepage]

Hazelden Foundation
Hazelden, a national nonprofit organization founded in 1949, helps people reclaim their lives from the disease of addiction. With nearly 60 years of knowledge and experience, Hazelden's comprehensive approach to addiction addresses the full range of patient, family, and professional needs, including treatment and continuing care for youth and adults, research, higher learning, public education and advocacy, and publishing. Hazelden's contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes photographs of the early buildings and of the people who helped shape Hazelden's education and publishing programs, and its unique "Minnesota Model" of addiction treatment. Hennepin County Medical Center History Museum
The Hennepin County Medical Center History Museum, located in the HCMC campus in downtown Minneapolis, collects, preserves and interprets the history of Minneapolis and Hennepin County's large public hospital. Their collections include photographs, documents, uniforms and medical equipment from every department of the hospital, from the laundry to the emergency room. For "Minnesota Reflections," the museum shared photographs of the dynamic life of the early hospital, founded as City Hospital in 1887 and renamed Minneapolis General Hospital in 1920. [homepage]

Hennepin History Museum
The Hennepin History Museum in Minneapolis, Minn., is home to the Hennepin County Historical Society, which preserves the history of Minnesota's most populous county. The museum presents exhibits and scholarly collections in the historic George Christian mansion. The more than 480 images the Hennepin History Museum contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" show the early history and development at St. Anthony Falls, including construction at the power company and scenes of the flour milling industry, which was central to the economic development of Minneapolis. Iron Range Research Center
The Iron Range Research Center is the library and archiving division of Ironworld Discovery Center in Chisholm, Minn., a historical museum founded in 1977. The mission of the research center is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Minnesota's iron ranges and the people who settled in this northeastern region of the state. The Iron Range Research Center contributed more than 370 images to "Minnesota Reflections." Many of the photographs show the history and development of iron industry on Mesabi Iron Range. Others show the lumber industry, railroads and town development in the area. [homepage]

Jackson County Historical Society
The Jackson County Historical Society is headquartered at the museum located in Lakefield, Minnesota. Their motto is "Preserving yesterday and today, for tomorrow!" Documentation of the history of the county is on-going through the collection of artifacts, photographs and stories. The photographs submitted to Minnesota Reflections are a sampling of many photographs documenting the colorful 150 year history of Jackson County.

James J. Hill Library
Among the collections preserved by the James J. Hill Library in St. Paul, Minn., are the James J. Hill Papers, the Louis W. Hill Papers and the Reed/Hyde Family Papers. The library also has an extensive collection of Hill family photographs and drawings. The library actively seeks additional manuscript collections. For "Minnesota Reflections," the James J. Hill Library contributed scenes from the James J. Hill family and early development of the Great Northern Railroad. [homepage]

Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest
The Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest collects, preserves and interprets records, photographs and artifacts representing the experiences of Jewish people and the Jewish community in the Upper Midwest. The collections chronicle the building of Jewish cultur, social services, labor, agricultural and religious organizations, and Jewish contributions to greater Minnesota. Our materials are housed at the Minneapolis Jewish Community Center and Elmer L. Andersen Library at the University of Minnesota. JHSUM contributed more than 470 photos from 1910 to 1950 to "Minnesota Reflections." Jewish shops, businesspeople, camps, social organizations, religious holiday celebrations, Hebrew schools, synagogue buildings, neighborhood locations and sports teams are a few of the areas featured. Lake County Historical Society
The Lake County Historical Society, in Two Harbors, Minn., collects photographs and artifacts and preserves buildings, such as the Two Harbors Light Station, that tell the history of Lake County in Minnesota's arrowhead region. The historical society contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images taken between 1883 and 1909 of the building of wooden iron ore docks in Two Harbors. [homepage]

Lake of the Woods Historical Society
From Baudette, MN, in the youngest and most northern county in the state, the Lake of the Woods County Historical Society serves as a repository for photographs, printed materials and artifacts that relate to the history of the Lake of the Woods area. The images the historical society contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" depict the area during settlement days, capture scenes from the devastating forest fire of 1910, and reflect early industries and development.

Luther Seminary Archives
The Luther Seminary Archives, St. Paul, includes material from all of its predecessor schools which, over a period of many years and several mergers, form the current institution. These predecessors include Augsburg Seminary (Lutheran Free Church), Red Wing Seminary (Hauge Synod), United Seminary (United Church), Luther Theological Seminary (Norwegian Synod), and Northwestern Seminary. All have contributed records to this large collection of papers, photographs, audio and video material, oral histories, and objects. Photographs for the "Minnesota Reflections" project represent all of the predecessor schools and document church, academic, and ethnic culture among Minnesota's Scandinavian people. [homepage]

The Macalester College archive collection includes photographs and documents related to the history of this St. Paul, Minn., college since its beginnings in 1885. Martin County Historical Society
The Martin County Historical Society, located at the Pioneer Museum in Fairmont, MN, contains artifacts, historical documents, and pictures relating to county history dating back to the mid-1800s. The society presents special programs for K-12 students and the public throughout the year. Their contributions to "Minnesota Reflections" consist of photographs of the county including street scenes, unique and historic buildings, lake scenes, and agricultural images that reflect the historic development of the county. The addition of historic maps and plat books provides additional historic perspectives of Martin County. [homepage]

McLeod County Historical Society
The McLeod County Historical Society in Hutchinson, MN, is dedicated to connecting with the past, understanding the present and making informed choices about the future by finding, preserving, explaining and sharing McLeod County History. Along with an extensive exhibit area and art gallery, their building houses a document and photograph archive. Preserving local history has been an important undertaking in McLeod County since the old settlers gathered in the late 19th century to share their stories. McLeod County Historical Society contributed 90 photographs to "Minnesota Reflections" that represent the towns of the county and show a variety of early street scenes, local businesses and homes.[homepage]

Minneapolis Public Library
The Minneapolis Public Library serves Minneapolis from a central library and 14 community locations. In addition to providing library services, Minneapolis Public Library archives historic images, books, documents and artifacts. They contributed nearly 500 images of the city of Minneapolis to "Minnesota Reflections" from stereographic cards (dual images that allow people three-dimensional views of scenes) that show much of the history of this city, including interiors of buildings. Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church
The Minnesota Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church is the regional organization of United Methodist congregations in Minnesota. The Conference Archive holds records, publications, photographs, audiotapes, films, artifacts and other materials from the 150-year history of the organization. The collection documents the history of the predecessors of the United Methodist Church; the Methodist Church, the Evangelical Church, and the United Brethren in Christ. For "Minnesota Reflections," the archive contributed 60 photographs that offer a glimpse of life in late 19th century and early 20th century at colleges, the State Fair, churches, and summer camps as well as church buildings with many different architectural styles typical of the time period. Minnesota Department of Health
The R. N. Barr Library at the Minnesota Department of Health has an extensive collection of public health books, journals, and videos, and presently provides lending, reference, interlibrary loan and other services to Minnesota's public health professionals, school health practitioners, and employees of the Minnesota Board of Nursing and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. The Barr Library has contributed the State Board of Health Reports for the years of 1872-1882 (Reports 1-3 and 5-9) to "Minnesota Reflections." [homepage]

Minnesota Department of Transportation
This library is primarily a technical library providing information services to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. It also provides transportation-related information services to the state's city and county engineers, other transportation practitioners and citizens of the state. It's collections hold a limited amount of historic information primarily relating to the department and the development of highways in the state. [homepage]

Minnesota Geological Survey
The Minnesota Geological Survey, part of the Winchell School of Earth Sciences Institute of Technology, at the University of Minnesota, is the state's primary center for earth sciences information. established in 1872. The Survey conducts basic and applied geological research - chiefly through geologic mapping - conveys that information to the public through publications and service activities, and promotes earth science education. Minnesota is its exclusive focus. The Minnesota Geological Survey contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" consists of more than 600 images of maps published separately or as part of reports from 1872 until the present. [homepage]

Minnesota Historical Society
The Minnesota Historical Society was established in 1849 to collect, preserve, and tell the story of Minnesota's past. Its extensive collections of printed materials, photographs, manuscripts, government records, maps, artifacts, and audio and video materials document the entire spectrum of Minnesota's history and pre-history. The Minnesota Historical Society's contributions to "Minnesota Reflections" include Minnesota's original land survey plats, several 19th century atlases and plat books, speeches and other items extolling the state's wealth and prospects, and a contrasting selection of letters and reports that document natural disasters and disaster relief. Minnesota Legislative Reference Library
The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library has supplied unbiased information to support the legislative process for more than 35 years. The Library's collection focuses on public policy materials including state government documents, consultants' reports and newspaper resources. The library also collects primary legislative materials including House and Senate committee minutes and hearings. The library contributed photographs to "Minnesota Reflections" of legislators serving Minnesota in 1913 and 1949 supplied from Minnesota Legislative Manuals. A recently launched database with biographical information on all current and former members of the Minnesota Legislature includes additional information on each of the legislators. [homepage]

Minnesota Legislature -- State Revisor's Office
The Office of the Revisor of Statutes, created by statute in 1939, is an office of the Minnesota Legislature. Staff members provide confidential, nonpartisan drafting services to both the House and the Senate, as well as the governor, constitutional officers, state agencies and departments. In addition, the Revisor's office is the official publisher of Minnesota law, including the Laws of Minnesota, Minnesota Statutes, and Minnesota Rules. Minnesota State Law Library
The Minnesota State Law Library, which collects state and federal legal materials, is the oldest continuing library in Minnesota. The Library and the Territory of Minnesota were created by the same act of Congress on March 3, 1849. Documents included in the State Law Library contributions to "Minnesota Reflections" are the handwritten first Rules of Court for Minnesota, the Republican and Democratic versions of the Minnesota Constitutional debates and other early Minnesota legal materials. Minnesota State University, Mankato
University Archives at Minnesota State University, Mankato collects and preserves records, documents and photographs related to the development of the institution from its early days of the Mankato State Normal School. The university collaborates with the Southern Minnesota Historical Center to document life in the south central region of the state. Minnesota State University, Mankato contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images of the development of Mankato State Normal School including school presidents, faculty, students, and athletics. Minnesota Streetcar Museum
The mission of the Minnesota Streetcar Museum is to preserve and communicate to the public the experience of Minnesota's electric street and interurban railway history. It has restored a number of historic Minnesota streetcars and operates them for the public at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis and at Excelsior. It also produces a quarterly magazine on Minnesota streetcar history and maintains an archive of about 10,000 photos. The photos submitted to "Minnesota Reflections" show all aspects of the operations of streetcars in the state, with an emphasis on the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. [homepage]

Morrison County Historical Society
The Morrison County Historical Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving artifacts and historical information regarding Morrison County, and to educating the public about that history. MCHS owns and operates The Charles A. Weyerhaeuser Memorial Museum in Little Falls, MN. MCHS contributed the county's 1892 plat book to Minnesota Reflections. [homepage]

New Brighton Area Historical Society
The New Brighton Area Historical Society, located in Ramsey County, collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to New Brighton, Arden Hills, and Mounds View, and has compiled them into three hardcover books, published in 1987, 2002, and 2005. The Society operates the New Brighton History Museum in the 1887 Bulwer Junction Depot, located in Long Lake Regional Park. The New Brighton Area Historical Society contributed 118 images to "Minnesota Reflections" that show the history of the area through early street scenes, business and industry, schools, churches, railroads, local events, and portraits. New Prague Area Historical Society
The New Prague Area Historical Society is housed in the Paul Komarek Room of the New Prague Community Library. Located a short distance south of the Minnesota River Valley and the Twin Cities, New Prague rests within the rolling hills of a rich agricultural region. Founded in 1856 by Bohemian, German and Irish families, New Prague continues to retain its ethnic identity and traditions. Professional and lay photographers have recorded the daily lives of people and the events of the community as early as 1870. Images provided to "Minnesota Reflections" from our collection record the development of Main Street and the active milling and farming industries that shaped the community.

Nicollet County Historical Society
From its home in the Treaty Site History Center, the Nicollet County Historical Society in St. Peter, Minn., preserves the past of this south central Minnesota county by collecting census records, maps, artifacts and photographs. The Nicollet County Historical Society's "Minnesota Reflections" project includes images related to the Minnesota River Valley, the St. Peter State Hospital, area businesses and agriculture, and the county's many communities. Norseland Lutheran Church
Norseland Lutheran Church, located in Nicollet County, Minnesota, was organized in 1858. The first resident pastor served Norwegian Lutherans in an area of 16 counties in Minnesota. Images contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" include photographs of Rev. Thomas Johnsen and the congregation which he served at Norseland along with the Herbjorn Gausta altar painting.

Northeast Minnesota Historical Center
The Northeast Minnesota Historical Center, a public archive located in the University of Minnesota, Duluth library, collects photographs, maps, manuscripts, family letters and other documents that tell the story of the development of the city of Duluth and Minnesota's four northeast counties - St. Louis, Lake, Cook and Carlton. The center contributed nearly 800 images to "Minnesota Reflections," including images from the Paul B. Gaylord collection, which depict the earliest development of downtown Duluth, the Louis P. Gallagher studio featuring early panoramas of Duluth harbor and the work of photographers that captured images of the lumber industry. Project images include the landscape work of George A. Newton. Northfield Historical Society
The Northfield Historical Society, located in historic downtown Northfield, MN, was founded in 1975 and is committed to being the primary community resource that honors, preserves and interprets Northfield's unique place in history, building a bridge from its past to its future. The images submitted to "Minnesota Reflections" showcase Northfield history from the early 1850s to the late 1940s. The images look at historic downtown Northfield, some early pioneers in Northfield, the attempted raid by the James-Younger Gang, and St. Olaf College and Carleton College. There are some amazing weather pictures including a snow storm in 1888 that dumped three feet of snow in Northfield. [homepage]

Northwest Minnesota Historical Center
Established in 1972 on the campus of Minnesota State University Moorhead, the Northwest Minnesota Historical Center collects and preserves information concerning the history and culture of the Red River Valley of the North. The holdings of the center consist of correspondence, diaries, newspapers, business records, oral interviews, photographs and other materials related to the history and culture of northwestern Minnesota. The Northwest Minnesota Historical Center contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" photographs by Haakon Bjornaas, whose work from 1907 to 1912 documented many communities in the Red River Valley, and letters sent to Henry Peterson, a rural Clay County farmer, by former German prisoners of war who between 1943 and 1945 worked on Peterson's truck farm as laborers. North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting
The North Star Museum of Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting is a 30-year-old institution, founded by Boy Scout adult volunteers in the 1970s. Their goal was to collect the material remains of their Scouting experiences. Since then, the collection has grown to represent Boy Scouting and Girl Scouting in the five-state upper Midwest region, and includes some 150,000 artifacts: uniforms, patches, accoutrements, films, video, audiotape and photographs. It opened in its own building in April 2006 in North St. Paul, Minn. The Museum collects, preserves, displays, and shares the history of Boy Scouting, Girl Scouting, and Girl Guiding. [homepage]

Olmsted County Historical Society
The Olmsted County Historical Society in Rochester, Minn., educates and informs the public about local history by providing programs, exhibits and special events at their museum, archives and five historic sites. Their collection includes artifacts, records and photographs from county towns and cities, businesses, organizations and individuals and the collections from several local photography studios. Included in the Olmsted County Historical Society project for "Minnesota Reflections" are photographs from the aftermath of a tornado that destroyed much of the city of Rochester in 1883 and of the development of St. Mary's Hospital and the Mayo Medical Complex as well as family images of the W.W. From its home in Thief River Falls in northwestern Minnesota, the Pennington County Historical Society works to discover, collect and preserve photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of Pennington County. For "Minnesota Reflections," this historical society contributed photographs from the work of Jacob Borry and O.A. Holm that show the early development of Pennington County including timber and railroad activities, events and street scenes from county towns. [homepage]

Pipestone County Historical Society
Located in a former city hall building now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Pipestone County Museum, Pipestone, Minn., is home to the Pipestone County Historical Society, which collects artifacts, creates exhibits, maintains archives and a research library, and provides programming relating to this southwestern county. Their holdings include photographs, county newspapers, Native American artifacts, school records, agricultural artifacts and textiles. For "Minnesota Reflections," Pipestone County Museum contributed images featuring the National Pipestone Monument area including the Three Maidens, Winnewissa Falls, Leaping Rock and the works of 1880s photographers G.L. The Pope County Historical Society in Glenwood, Minn., collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of Pope County. The historical society's contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" features the work of M.J. Trenham, a portrait and landscape photographer from Alexandria, Minn. Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation
The Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation, Inc., was established in 1996 by the Probstfield family to care for the historic Randolph M. Probstfield family farm. Located in Oakport Township, Clay County, on the banks of the Red River, just north of Moorhead, the farm was begun in 1869 by Randolph, a German immigrant, the well-educated son of German famers, and his wife Catherine, a second-generation German immigrant. Together they managed the farm and raised 11 children. Randolph died in 1911, but left behind extensive daily journals, the earliest of which are available in our online collection in Minnesota Reflections.

Renville County Historical Society
The Renville County Historical Society preserves the history of Renville County with a museum in its home location of Morton, Minn. The historical society collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts. For "Minnesota Reflections," the Renville County Historical Society contributed five photographs each of 10 of this south central county's towns. The photographs were taken from the 1870s to 1904. Roseau County Historical Society
The Roseau County Historical Society, in Roseau, Minn., gathers manuscripts, photographs, printed materials, American Indian artifacts and personal and public items to help people learn about the history of this northwest Minnesota county. They display much of this history in the Roseau County Historical Museum. The historical society contributed more than 100 images to "Minnesota Reflections" showing agriculture, business and labor, education, ethnic groups, recreation, leisure and transportation. Sacred Heart Area Historical Society
The Sacred Heart Area Historical Society, located in the town of Sacred Heart in Renville County, Minn., collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the German and Scandinavian settlement of this western part of Minnesota. For "Minnesota Reflections," the Sacred Heart Area Historical Society contributed the photographic work of A.T. Ellingboe; Emil I. Olsen; O.S. Myhre; and Ole C. Sparstad. The subjects include businesses, residences and town scenes.

St. Benedict's Monastery
The archivists at the St. Benedict's Monastery, home of the Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., document the history and mission of this Catholic order with more than 4,000 artifacts dating to 1857. The monastery contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images of the sisters and their missions in towns across the state. The photographs show the convent, grade schools and high schools, hospitals, the orphanage in St. Joseph, the White Earth Mission and portraits. [homepage]

St. Cloud State University
University Archives at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., holds documents and records related to the development of the institution from the early days as Minnesota's third Normal School to its present role as the largest of the state's seven state universities. The St. Cloud State University digitized images for "Minnesota Reflections" that show classes at St. Cloud Normal School, athletic activities, student activities and class photographs. St. John's Abbey
The St. John's Abbey Archives, founded in 1871, collects, preserves and makes available to the public materials that show the history of the St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minn., from 1856 to the present. The collection preserves the life and history of the abbey and its members, through manuscript collections, letters, diaries, journals, publications, clippings, photographs, audiotapes, films, oral histories, and liturgical and spiritual materials. The St. John's Abbey Archives project for "Minnesota Reflections" shows the Catholic culture and people of rural Central Minnesota from 1872 to 1908. [homepage]

St. Olaf College
The Shaw-Olson Center for College History at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., maintains paper records, photographs and recordings that document the college's history and actively collects historical materials about St. Olaf graduates. The center's holdings include the Ole G. Felland collection of St. Olaf and Norwegian-American photographs and records from defunct Lutheran schools (notably, the Red Wing Seminary, in Red Wing, Minn.). For "Minnesota Reflections," St. Olaf College contributed images of the original college buildings: the main building, Ladies' Hall (the first women's dormitory), Ytterboe Hall (the first men's dormitory), Steensland Library, Hoyme Chapel and the president's house. St. Paul Public Library
The Saint Paul Public Library was founded in 1882, and now serves the city of Saint Paul from a Central Library, 12 branches, and a bookmobile. Among is special collections, the library maintains documents and other items detailing Saint Paul's history. The library contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" nearly 50 images taken between 1913 and 1916 capturing the Central Library during various phases of its construction and a collection of aerial photos of St. Paul from the mid-1920s. St. Peter Regional Treatment Center
The St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, in St. Peter, Minnesota, is the state's earliest psychiatric treatment facility. Established in 1866, it was first known as the Asylum for the Insane and later as the St. Peter State Hospital. For Minnesota Reflections, the museum at the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center contributed three albums of photographs taken from approximately 1915 through the early 1930s. These photographs are witness to early 20th century life and treatment during the hospital's early years.

Scott County Historical Society
From its home in the Stans Museum in Shakopee, Minn., the Scott County Historical Society searches for and preserves the history and cultural heritage of Scott County. They share their history through exhibits and educational programs. The Scott County collection includes archival items, artifacts, and photographs that relate to residents, businesses and social heritage and the Maurice Stans government papers and African collection. The Scott County Historical Society contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes images of the development of the Shakopee and Belle Plaine areas including business, social and architectural history. The Sherburne County Historical Society helps the people of this Central Minnesota county develop an appreciation for the area's settlement and history. The historical society operates the Sherburne History Center in Becker, Minnesota, where it collects, preserves and interprets the history of Sherburne County. Our "Minnesota Reflections" contribution includes images of the Charles M. Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet
The history of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, reflects the historical development of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota. The sisters arrived in St. Paul in 1851, before Minnesota became a state, and opened schools, hospitals and social service agencies for the people of the area. The mission of the Archives of the Sisters of St. Joseph is to preserve and share the history, spirit, and memory of the St. Paul Province. [homepage]

Stearns History Museum
The Stearns History Museum in St. Cloud, Minn., collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts related to the history of Stearns County. They share this information in a two-story exhibit hall, a library and research center and through educational programming. Stevens County Historical Society
From its prairie home in Morris, Minn., the Stevens County Historical Society collects photographs, printed materials and artifacts that tell the story of the role Stevens County in the movement of settlers into the Dakotas and the western prairies. For "Minnesota Reflections," the Stevens County Historical Society shared images of the American Indian Boarding School, which eventually became the University of Minnesota, Morris. Other images capture the development of rural west central Minnesota, which include agricultural, industrial, social, labor, architectural and construction history.

Stewartville Public Library
The Stewartville Public Library provides the people of the Stewartville, Minn., area with library services and has preserved some photographs and printed materials related to the history of this southeast Minnesota town. The library contributed images from the late 1800s to "Minnesota Reflections" of homes in the area, including the house that was the birthplace of Richard Sears of the Sears and Roebuck Corporation. Stillwater Public Library
In additional to serving the eastern Minnesota community of Stillwater as its library, the Stillwater Public Library preserves historical collections, including photographs, of this town on the banks of the St. Croix River. The Stillwater Public Library's contribution to "Minnesota Reflections" includes digitized images of the James Sinclair stereopticon slides. Sinclair was a Stillwater area photographer from approximately 1876 to 1890. His collection, titled "Views In and Around Stillwater," portrays people and scenes in the late 1800s. The Todd County Historical Society was organized to preserve the history and artifacts and genealogies of the residents of Todd County in a safe location for the generations to come. For "Minnesota Reflections," Todd County contributed its 1906 county plat book.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, administers lock and dam building and operations for the upper Mississippi River region and maintains historic collections related to its activities. From headquarters in St. Paul, Minn., this district office has served the upper Mississippi River basin and surrounding areas since 1866. The St. Paul District office contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images from the Henry P. Bosse (1844-1903) photographic collection of the Upper Mississippi taken between 1883 and 1892, while Bosse was employed as a draftsman by the Corps. His images include long-vanished vistas of bluffs and coulees, rapidly growing cities, workboats pulling snags out of new channels, rock quarries, dredging operations and construction of dams and bridges. University of Minnesota, Duluth
The University of Minnesota, Duluth Archives, located in the campus library, collects and preserves publications, photographs, memorabilia and university records from its early days as the Duluth Normal School (later becoming the Duluth State Teachers College). The University of Minnesota, Duluth Library contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images of the Duluth Normal School from about 1904. The Northwest Architectural Archives at the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis) Libraries collects the records of architects, engineers, contractors, landscape architects and interior designers from Minnesota and surrounding areas. This includes drawings, photographs and job files. They contributed to "Minnesota Reflections" images from the architectural drawings of Harvey Ellis (1854 - 1904) taken between 1887 and 1891. The University of St. Thomas Special Collections in the O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library documents the history of the university (formerly known as a college), the St. Paul Seminary, the Nazareth Hall Seminary, the St. John Vianney Seminary, the St. Thomas Military Academy (to 1965) and the Catholic Digest (1939 to 2001). Among its holdings are the official records of administrative offices, academic departments and student organizations, the college newspaper and the college and academy yearbooks. Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library is the graduate theological library of the University of St. Thomas. Affiliated with The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, it provides curricular support for programs that prepare ordained and lay leaders for ministry. The Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library is widely known for its holdings in biblical studies, Catholic theology, sacraments, liturgical studies, and Church history. Various items in its Rare Book Collection are from Archbishop John Ireland's personal collection. This MDL collection includes imprints of religious instruction, New Testament selections, and printed music and hymns in Native languages common to Minnesota published from 1850 to 1925, and temperance tracts by Archbishop John Ireland and Monsignor James Reardon published from 1875 to 1909. Since 1938, Waseca County Historical Society has preserved and interpreted the history of the county, organized in 1857. The White Bear Lake Area Historical Society in White Bear Lake, Minn., serves the public with a museum, archives and resource library. The collection, which spans nearly 150 years, includes artifacts, photographs and records relating to the resorts, railroads, businesses and governments of the five municipalities that touch White Bear Lake, just north of St. Paul. For "Minnesota Reflections," the historical society contributed images of White Bear Lake's heyday as Minnesota's first resort town and includes images of the resorts and visitors and the communities that developed to serve them. Winona County Historical Society
The mission of the Winona County Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and interpret materials that document the human history of Winona County. The main museum, which used to serve as the county's National Guard Armory, features a time-line of Winona County history, an award-winning children's exhibit, a large library and archives, collection storage, offices, programming space, a gift shop and used bookstore. The Society also operates two smaller museums, the Bunnell House, an 1850s Gothic style house, and the Arches Museum, a complex of buildings and exhibits focused on the agricultural and pioneer history of the county.
